The following is a transcription of the Tambovka Doukhobor Cemetery located 2 miles west of Runnymede, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Cote No. 271. Land location: NW 2-29-31 West of First. View of the cemetery from the south-west facing north-east.

Historical Background

Tambovka (Tombovka) Cemetery was established in 1902 by the Doukhobors of Tambovka village near Runnymede. After the abandonment of the village in 1920, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors. Located near Little Boggy Creek, it was sometimes also known as Little Boggy Cemetery. The cemetery is still in active use today. It is privately owned and maintained by a cemetery committee. The cemetery is in very good condition.

Layout

The cemetery is one acre in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is a single iron gate on the west side. The cemetery contains 139 interments in a single section comprised of 11 rows facing east-west. Forty-nine of the graves have no marker and the mounds have been leveled. I have used death certificates and oral tradition to identify these. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain, upright marble, slate or concrete headstones. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Vossianiye Cemetery – Runnymede District, Saskatchewan

The following is a transcription of the Vossianiye Doukhobor Cemetery located 5 miles south-west of Runnymede, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Cote No. 271. Land location: NE 21-28-31 West of First. Latitude: 51°26.519. Longitude: 101°47.040. Transcribed by Jonathan J. Kalmakoff with Ron Tetoff on August 13, 2005.

View of the Vossianiye village prayer home, located a 1/4 mile north of the cemetery.

Historical Background

Vossianiye (Vossialovka) Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Vossianiye (Vossialovka) village near Runnymede. After the abandonment of the village in 1920, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors until the 1940’s. Thereafter, the cemetery ceased to be actively used. For many years it sat unkept, unfenced, in a pasture. Grazing cattle knocked over many of the stones. In 2002, the cemetery was fenced, however, it is still badly overgrown. The cemetery is privately owned.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately one acre in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is no gate. There is dense scrub and brush throughout. The cemetery contains approximately 75 interments in a single section comprised of five rows facing east-west. The vast majority of the graves (73) have no headstones, however, many of the graves are marked by fieldstone. I have used death certificates to identify two of these. The remaining 71 or so unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain, upright concrete or slate headstones. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery from Kamsack, travel south on Highway No. 8 for 9 miles (14.5 km). Then turn east on Poplar Point Road and continue for 4 miles (6.4 km). Turn north and travel a 1/2 mile (.9 km) on the gravel road. To access the cemetery from Runnymede, travel south on the gravel road for 5 miles (8.1 km). Then turn west on Secondary Route No. 357 for 3 miles (4.8 km). Turn north on the gravel road and continue for 2 1/2 miles (4 km). The cemetery is on the west side of the road, approximately 100 yards (91 m) from the road allowance. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.
