Novoye Cemetery – Canora District, Saskatchewan

The following is a transcription of the Novoye Doukhobor Cemetery located 7 miles north-east of Canora, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Keys No. 303. Land location: NE 14-31-3 West of Second. Historical Background

Novoye Cemetery was established in 1905 by the Doukhobors of Novoye village near Canora. After the abandonment of the village in 1920, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors until the 1940’s. It is no longer in active use and is somewhat overgrown. It is privately owned.  

Layout

The cemetery is approximately half an acre in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is no gate. There is scrub and brush throughout. The cemetery contains 28 known interments in a single section.  The graves are unmarked, save for a single commemorative plaque.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel north from Canora on Highway No. 9 for two miles (3.2 km). Then turn east and continue on the gravel road for 5 miles (8.1 km). Turn south on the gravel road and continue for 1/4 mile (.6 km). You will come to a farmyard, after which, continue on the dirt road as it bends west for approximately 1/4 mile (.5 km). The road leads to a cattle feedlot and ends in front of a gate. The cemetery is 25 yards (23 m) south of the gate. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Meadowdale Cemetery – Canora District, Saskatchewan

The following is a transcription of the Meadowdale Cemetery located 8 miles north-east of Canora, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Keys No. 303. Land location: NW 34-31-3 West of Second. Historical Background

Meadowdale Cemetery was established in 1918 by Independent Doukhobors living in the Meadowdale School District north-east of Canora, Saskatchewan. It was used by local Doukhobors until 1944. It is no longer in active use. The cemetery was restored in 2003-2004 and since that time has been well maintained. It is privately owned.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately a tenth of an acre in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is an open gate on the north side. The cemetery contains 17 interments in a single section comprised of five rows facing east-west. The majority of graves (11) have no marker and the mounds have been leveled. For these, I have used the cemetery register and death certificates to identify the interments. The six grave markers are plain, upright marble and slate headstones. Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel 5 miles (8.1 km) north of Canora, Saskatchewan on Highway No. 9. Then turn east on Secondary Route No. 754 for 3 1/2 miles (5.6 km). The cemetery is on the south side of the road allowance. The cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Blagoveshcheniye Cemetery Site – Canora District, Saskatchewan

The following is an overview of the Blagoveshcheniye Doukhobor Cemetery Site located 8 miles north-east of Canora, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Keys No. 303. Historical Background

Blagoveshcheniye Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Blagoveshcheniye village near Canora. Following the abandonment of the village in 1920, the cemetery ceased to be actively used. In the 1970’s, the cemetery site was destroyed and is now under cultivation. It is privately owned.

Layout

According to tradition, the cemetery was approximately half an acre in size. The cemetery contained approximately 50 interments in one or more rows facing east-west. The graves were unmarked. From the 1920’s to the 1970’s, the cemetery was overgrown with bush. When the site was cleared in the 1970’s, all traces of the cemetery were removed.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel north from Canora on Highway No. 9 for two miles (3.2 km). Then turn east and continue on the gravel road for 6 miles (9.7 km). You will come to a "T" in the road. Take the dirt road east for another .2 miles (.3 km). You will travel down and up the other side of a small valley. The cemetery site is .4 miles (.6 km) to the north of the road allowance. It is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

There is no burial register, cemetery plot map, death certificates, grave markers or other records for Blagoveshcheniye Cemetery. According to tradition, the following people are known to have been buried there:

Besednoye Cemetery Site – Canora District, Saskatchewan

The following is an overview of the Besednoye Doukhobor Cemetery Site located 3 miles north-east of Canora, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Keys No. 303. Land location: NE 17-31-3 West of Second. Latitude: 51°23.485. Longitude: 102°23.776. Compiled by Jonathan J. Kalmakoff on March 28, 2006.

Historical Background

Besednoye Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Besednoye village near Canora, Saskatchewan.  After the abandonment of the village in 1914, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors until 1928. Thereafter, it ceased to be actively used.  In 1976, the site was destroyed by power line construction. From 2003 to 2005, the site was cleared and excavated for archaeological investigation.  Further site restoration is planned for 2006. The cemetery is privately owned. 

Layout

The cemetery site is approximately an eighth of an acre in size.  It contains 17 interments in a single section comprised of two rows facing east-west.  The graves are unmarked and leveled. I have used census records, death certificates and oral tradition to identify 8 of these. The site will be re-fenced in 2006.  

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery site, travel north from from Canora on Highway No. 9 for 2 miles (3.2 km).  Then turn east on the grid road and continue for 1.5 miles (2.4 km). The cemetery is along the property line of a cultivated field approximately 1/4 mile (.4 km) south of the road allowance. It can be accessed by a low level crossing over Crooked Hill Creek. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.
