The following is a transcription of the Gilpin Cemetery (No. 1) located in Gilpin, British Columbia. Land location: District Lot 2733, Group 1, Similkameen Division, Yale District Plan 6174A, Except Part Known As RW Of The VV and E Railway. Latitude: 49° 00.472. Historical Background

Gilpin Cemetery (No. 1) was established in 1937 by Sons of Freedom Doukhobors to serve the community of Gilpin. It is in active use. It is privately owned by the Crown and is leased to the community.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately a tenth of an acre in size and is unenclosed. It is somewhat overgrown. The cemetery contains approximately 98 interments in a single section comprised of twelve rows facing east-west. The majority of graves (90) have no marker other than funeral home tags.  Many of the mounds are still clearly visible. We have used death registrations and oral tradition to identify 42 unmarked graves. The remaining unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain concrete or wooden upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel on Gilpin Road in Gilpin, British Columbia. After coming to the three-way fork, take the right road and continue (across the railway tracks) for approximately 20 m (21.8 yards).  At the next fork, take the right road leading towards the mountain and continue for approximately .5 km (.3 mile).  At the next fork, take the left road leading straight up the mountain and continue for approximately 1 km (.6 mile).  The cemetery is on right side of the road allowance. Note that a four-wheel drive vehicle is required.

Historical Background

Brilliant Cemetery was established in 1908 by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood ("CCUB") to serve the Brilliant settlement area. After the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1939, the cemetery continued to be used by its successor organization, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ ("USCC"). It is still in active use today. It is owned and maintained by the USCC Cemetery Association.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately five acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence on the east parameter and a row of trees on the west parameter. The cemetery contains approximately 1,155 interments in a single section comprised of 28 rows facing east-west. Almost half of the graves (550) have no marker and the mounds have been leveled. I have used death registrations and oral tradition to identify over 150 of these.  The remaining unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel north from Castlegar on Highway No. 3. Turn right at Robson Access Road and continue for approximately 1.5 km (.9 miles). Turn left and cross over Brillliant Road and continue as it turns into Makayev Road.  Then turn right onto Trubetskoff Road. The cemetery is on the left side of the road at the junction of Trubetskoff Road and Popoff Road. The cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Champion Creek (Blagodatnoye) Doukhobor Cemetery – Castlegar District, British Columbia

The following is a transcription of the Champion Creek (Blagodatnoye) Cemetery located 5 kilometres south of Castlegar, British Columbia. Historical Background

Blagodatnoye Cemetery was established in 1912 by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood ("CCUB") to serve the Blagodatnoye settlement area. Located along Champion Creek, it also came to be known as Champion Creek Doukhobor Cemetery. After the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1939, the cemetery continued to be used by its successor organization, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ ("USCC") until the 1970’s. It is no longer in active use. The cemetery is privately owned and maintained by the USCC Cemetery Association. It was restored in 2000.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately two acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence with a single iron gate. It is partially wooded. The cemetery contains approximately 120 interments in a single section comprised of nine rows facing east-west. The majority of graves (108) have no marker and the mounds have been leveled. Some mounds are marked by piles of rock. We have used death registrations to identify 52 unmarked graves. The remaining 56 or so unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel south from Castlegar on Highway No. 3 towards Salmo. Turn right at Columbia Road and continue for approximately 1 km (.6 mile). Turn left at Prairie Road and continue for approximately 3 km (1.9 mile) to the end of the pavement, then continue for approximately 2 km (1.2 mile) to the locked gate. (Note that the road is paved for a several kilometres before turning into a dirt road. The road parallels the river, heading towards Trail). Once at the locked gate, continue on foot for approximately 2 km (1.2 mile). Where the road splits, continue along the lower road to the right which ends in front of the cemetery entrance. The cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Porto Rico Doukhobor Cemetery – Ymir District, British Columbia

The following is a transcription of Porto Rico Doukhobor Cemetery located 4 miles north of Ymir, British Columbia. Land location: Plan X55, District Lot 1238, Kootenay District. Latitude: 49°19.572. Historical Background

This cemetery may have been established by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood to serve its logging camp at Porto Rico from 1921 to 1926.  It is known to have been used by Sons of Freedom Doukhobors interned at the abandoned camp from 1929 to 1931. Thereafter, the cemetery ceased to be actively used and is now badly outgrown. It is owned by the Crown.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately a tenth of an acre in size and is unenclosed. There is dense scrub, brush and trees throughout. The cemetery contains seven interments in a single section comprised of two rows facing east-west. The graves are unmarked, however, the mounds are still clearly visible. We have used oral tradition to identify six of these.  The remaining unmarked grave is unidentified.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery from Nelson, travel south on Highway No. 6 for 22.7 km (14.1 miles). Pass the right-hand (west-bound) turnoff to Porto-Rico-Ymir Road, go over the Barret Creek Bridge and stop at the left-hand (east-bound) turnoff to Porto-Rico-Ymir Road. Or, to access the cemetery from Ymir, travel north on Highway No. 6 for 6 km (4 miles) and stop at the right-hand (east-bound) turnoff to Porto-Rico-Ymir Road. In either case, park at the turnoff and continue on foot. Proceed west, crossing Highway No. 6 and then following the power line for approximately 60 feet until it reaches the main power line. Then walk approximately 40 feet south (left) until reaching a large rock, three feet in diameter. From the rock, continue up the hillside for approximately 125 feet. The cemetery is located at the top of the hill.

Plodorodnoye Cemetery was established in 1911 by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood ("CCUB") to serve the Plodorodnoye settlement area. Located near Glade it also came to be known as Glade Doukhobor Cemetery. After the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1939, the cemetery continued to be used by its successor organization, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ ("USCC"). It is still in active use today. It is owned and maintained by the USCC Cemetery Association.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately two acres in size and is unenclosed.  The cemetery contains approximately 573 interments in a single section comprised of nineteen rows facing east-west. Approximately 400 of the graves have no marker, however, many of the mounds are still clearly visible.  We have used death registrations and oral tradition to identify 59 of these. The remaining unmarked graves are unidentified. Driving Directions

To access the cemetery from Highway 3 (between Tarrys and Shoreacres): Take the Glade Ferry Road (across Highway 3 from the ESSO convenience store) and follow to the Glade Ferry for 1.9 km (1.18 miles). Cross the Columbia River on the ferry and once you dock you are on Division Road; follow it straight (east) through the intersection (Glade Road) and the cemetery is a short distance on the right hand side (400 metres).  This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Perry Siding (Persikovoye) Cemetery – Perrys, British Columbia

The following is a transcription of the Perry Siding (Persikovoye) Cemetery located at Perrys, British Columbia. Land location: Lot 11, District Lot 383, Kootenay District Plan 2887. Historical Background

Persikovoye Cemetery was established in 1915 by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood (“CCUB”) to serve the Persikovoye settlement area. Located near Perry Siding (present-day Perrys) it also came to be known as Perry Siding Cemetery. After the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1939, the cemetery continued to be used by its successor organization, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ (“USCC”). It is still in active use today. It is owned and maintained by the USCC Cemetery Association.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately two acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence.  It is located on a hillside. The cemetery contains approximately 300 interments in a single section comprised of thirteen rows facing east-west. Approximately 110 of the graves have no marker and the mounds have been leveled. I have used death registrations and oral tradition to identify 48 of these. The remaining unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

The cemetery is situated approximately 300 meters along Perry Cemetery Road, which is accessed off the east side of Highway 6 in Perrys, British Columbia.

Ootischenia Cemetery – Ootischenia, British Columbia

The following is a transcription of Ootischenia Cemetery located in Ootischenia, British Columbia. Land location: Lot 70, District Lot 4598, Kootenay District Plan 4882. Latitude: 49°16.647. Longitude: 117°38.369. Transcribed by Lawrna and Margaret Myers in May 2005. Updated on August 26, 2007.

Historical Background

The original cemetery on the south end, known as Waterloo Graveyard, was established in 1889 to serve the Waterloo mining camp until its demise in 1902. In 1908, it was incorporated into Ootischenia Cemetery, which was established by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood ("CCUB") to serve the Ootischenia settlement area. After the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1939, Ootischenia Cemetery continued to be used by its successor organization, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ ("USCC"). It is still in active use today. It is owned and maintained by the USCC Cemetery Association.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately five acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence on its north, east and south parameter. On its west parameter, it is bounded by the Columbia River. The cemetery contains approximately 853 interments in a single section comprised of eighteen rows facing east-west. The vast majority of the graves (600) have no marker and many of the mounds have been leveled. I have used death registrations and oral tradition to identify twenty-two of these.  The remaining unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel south from Castlegar on Highway No. 3 towards Salmo. Turn right at Columbia Road and continue for approximately .5 km (.3 mile). Turn right at Waterloo Road and continue for approximately 3 km (1.9 mile). At the bottom of the hill, turn left at the junction and continue for approximately .5 km (.3 mile). The cemetery is on the right side of the road. The cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Pass Creek Doukhobor Cemetery – Pass Creek, British Columbia

Historical Background

Pass Creek Cemetery was established in 1909 by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood ("CCUB") to serve the Lugovoye settlement area. For this reason, it was also known as Lugovoye Cemetery. After the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1939, the cemetery continued to be used by members of its successor organization, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ ("USCC"). It is still in active use today. It is owned and maintained by the USCC Cemetery Association.

Layout

The cemetery is two acres in size and is partially enclosed by a wire fence on the east side. There are two main entrances. The cemetery contains approximately 252 interments in one section comprised of forty-one rows facing east-west. Approximately 100 of the graves have no marker, however, many of the mounds are still clearly visible. I have used death registrations and oral tradition to identify 53 of these. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery from Castlegar, turn off Highway No. 3A onto Robson Access Road and continue north for 3 km (1.9 miles).  Turn right on Pass Creek Road and continue for 7.7 km (4.7 miles). Then turn left on Sookeroff Road and continue for 700 m (765 yards). The cemetery is on the left-hand side of the road.

Shoreacres (Prekrasnoye) Cemetery – Shoreacres, British Columbia

The following is a transcription of the Shoreacres (Prekrasnoye) Cemetery located at Shoreacres, British Columbia. Land location: Lot 56, District Lot 303, Kootenay District Plan 2954. Latitude: 49°26.077. Longitude: 117°31.407. Transcribed by Lawrna and Margaret Myers in April 2006.

Historical Background

Prekrasnoye Cemetery was established in 1912 by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood ("CCUB") to serve the Prekrasnoye settlement area. Located near Shoreacres it also came to be known as Shoreacres Doukhobor Cemetery. After the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1939, the cemetery continued to be used by its successor organization, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ ("USCC"). It is still in active use today. It is owned and maintained by the USCC Cemetery Association.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately two acres in size and is enclosed by a wire gate and surrounding shelterbelt.  The cemetery contains approximately 520 interments in a single section comprised of twenty rows facing east-west. Approximately 190 of the graves have no marker and the mounds have been leveled. We have used death registrations and oral tradition to identify 71 of these. The remaining unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel east from the junction of Highway No. 3A and the Shoreacres Exit across the railroad tracks. Turn left and follow Shoreacres Road for 800 m (875 yards) to the junction. Then turn left and follow Shoreacres Road for 400 m (437 yards). Turn right on McHardy Road and continue for 300 m (328 yards). Then turn left on Davidson Road and continue for 200 m (218 yards). The cemetery is on the left side of the road allowance. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Krestova Cemetery – Krestova, British Columbia

The following is a transcription of Krestova Cemetery located in Krestova, British Columbia. Land location: Lot 32 of Lot S 7368, 8773, 9326, Kootenay District, Plan 5487. Latitude: 49°25.552. Historical Background

Krestova Cemetery was established in 1922 by the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood ("CCUB") to serve the Krestova settlement. From 1932 onward, it was used mainly by Sons of Freedom living in Krestova.  Since 1975, it has been owned and maintained by the Krestova Doukhobor Community.  It is still in active use today.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately twenty acres in size and is unenclosed. There is dense scrub, brush and trees throughout some portions of the cemetery. The cemetery contains approximately 600 interments in two sections (1922-1983, 1984-present) comprised of multiple rows facing east-west. Many of the graves (250) have no marker, however, many of the mounds are still clearly visible. We have used cemetery records, death registrations, obituaries and oral tradition to identify 96 of these.  The remaining 154 or so unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, driving from Nelson or Castlegar on Highway 3A, turn off onto Highway 6 at Playmore Junction.  Continue for 2.3 km, passing the Crescent Valley Store, Crescent Valley Fire Hall and Crescent Valley Community Hall. Then turn left onto Pass Creek Road, cross the bridge and turn to the right and follow Krestova Road for 5 km. You will come to a junction with Gage Road.  Continue straight on Krestova Cemetery Road for 1.8 km.  The cemetery is on the left-hand road allowance. The cemetery is open to the public.
