The following is an overview of the Vosneseniye Doukhobor Cemetery Site located 7 miles northeast of Arran, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Livingston No. 331. Land location: NW 22-34-30 West of First. Latitude: 51°55.971. Longitude: 101°38.263. Compiled by Jonathan J. Kalmakoff with George Negrave on October 20, 2007.

View of the cemetery site (rise above the cattle, center) from the farmyard facing southeast.

Historical Background

Vosneseniye Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Vosneseniye village near Arran. It was also used by the Doukhobors of the nearby village of Vera, which did not have a cemetery of its own. After the abandonment of the villages in 1913, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors until the 1930’s. In approximately 2002, the cemetery site was destroyed. It is privately owned.

Layout

According to tradition, the cemetery was approximately one acre in size. The cemetery contained approximately 40 interments in one or more rows facing east-west. Many of the graves were marked with headstones. When the site was cleared in the approximately 2002, all traces of the cemetery were removed. It is now a cattle pasture.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel east from Arran on Highway No. 49 for 4 miles (6.4 km). Turn north on the grid road and continue for 4 1/2 miles (7.2 km). Then turn west on the grid road and continue for 1 mile (1.6 km). Turn south on the grid road and continue for 1/2 a mile (0.8 km).  Then turn east into the approach and continue for 1/4 mile (.4 km) until you reach a farmyard.  From the farmyard, continue on foot for another 1/4 mile (.4 km) south east.  The cemetery site is located on a rise of land immediately north of the Swan River. It is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Burials

There is no burial register, cemetery plot map, death certificates, grave markers or other records for Vosneseniye Cemetery. According to tradition, the following people are known to have been buried there:

Surname Name Birth Date Death Date Comments

Tikhomirnoye Cemetery – Arran District, Saskatchewan

The following is a transcription of the Tikhomirnoye Doukhobor Cemetery located 5 miles south-east of Arran, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of St. Philips No. 301. Land location: SE 28-33-30 West of First. Latitude: 51°51.406. Longitude: 101°39.469. Transcribed by Jonathan J. Kalmakoff with George Negrave on October 20, 2007.

View of the cemetery from the southwest facing northeast. It is located along the periphery of trees. Note the fallen headstone (centre).

Historical Background

Tikhomirnoye Cemetery was established in 1902 by the Doukhobors of Tikhomirnoye village near Arran. After the abandonment of the village in 1917, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors until the 1940’s. It is no longer in active use and is badly overgrown. It is privately owned.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately half an acre in size and is unenclosed. There is dense scrub and brush throughout. The cemetery contains approximately 20 interments in a single section comprised of several rows facing east-west. The vast majority of graves (19) have no marker, however, some of the mounds are still clearly visible. I have used death certificates to identify three of these. The remaining unmarked graves are unidentified. The single grave with a marker has a plain, upright slate headstone.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel east from Arran on Highway No. 49 for 3 miles (4.8 km). Then turn south on the grid road and continue for 1 3/4 miles (2.8 km), crossing Bearhead Creek. Then turn west into the farmyard approach.  From the farmyard, continue on the dirt road as it bends north and west through a pasture for half a mile (0.8 km).  The cemetery is located at the edge of a bluff of trees, immediately south of Bearhead Creek. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Semenovka Cemetery – Arran District, Saskatchewan

The following is a transcription of the Semenovka Doukhobor Cemetery located 7 miles north-east of Arran, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Livingston No. 331. Land location: NW 14-34-30 West of First. Latitude: 51°55.103. Longitude: 101°37.202. Transcribed by Jonathan J. Kalmakoff with Fred S. Petroff on July 3, 2005. Updated October 18, 2008.

View of the cemetery from the southwest facing northeast.

Historical Background

Semenovka (aka Simonovka) Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Semenovka village near Arran. After the abandonment of the village in 1917, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors. Located along Bear Head Creek, it was sometimes also known as Bear Head Cemetery. The cemetery is still in active use today. It is privately owned by the Crown and is well maintained.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately two acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is a single iron gate on the south side. The cemetery contains 170 interments in a single section comprised of 18 rows facing east-west. I have used the cemetery plot map and death certificates to identify 40 unmarked graves. There are considerable gaps between some of the marked graves which would suggest as many as 30 additional unmarked graves. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel east from the Village of Arran Exit on Highway No. 49 for 4 miles (6.4 km). Turn north on the gravel road and continue for 2 1/2 miles (4 km). You will pass over the Bear Head Creek bridge. Then turn east on the dirt road and continue for 220 yards (200 m). You will come to a fork in the road. Turn north on the dirt road and continue for 110 yards (100 m). The road ends in front of the cemetery gate. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Historical Background

Lebedevo Cemetery was established in 1905 by the Doukhobors of Lebedevo village near Arran. After the abandonment of the village in 1917, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors until the 1940’s. It is no longer in active use and is badly overgrown. It is privately owned.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately one acre in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is dense scrub and brush throughout. The cemetery contains approximately 50 interments in a single section comprised of five rows facing east-west. The vast majority of graves (45) have no marker, however, many of the mounds are still clearly visible. I have used death certificates and oral tradition to identify 13 of these. The remaining unmarked graves are unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain, upright marble or slate headstones. Click here for an online cemetery map.

To access the cemetery from Arran, travel west on Highway No. 49 for 4 miles (6.4 km). Or to access the cemetery from Pelly, travel east on Highway No. 49 for 5 miles (8.0 km).
