Wisnia School
In 1913, Doukhobor and Ukrainian settlers petitioned for the organization of a school district four miles southwest of Veregin, Saskatchewan. They originally proposed the name Wishnia, meaning “cherry” in their native language, because of the wild cherries that abounded the area. However, the Department of Education mistakenly registered the name as Wisnia School District No. 2870. It operated until 1963, when it amalgamated into the Kamsack School Division. [SW19-29-1-W2]
