Porcupine
In 1902, the Great Northern Railway built Porcupine Siding at the mouth of Porcupine Creek where it meets the Salmo River, one mile south of Ymir, British Columbia. The siding was a short track connected to the main track where railcars were loaded with ore from the Hunter V mine which operated nearby from 1902-1905, and with lumber from the sawmills operating there from 1906 onward. A mining and lumber camp was built there. In 1918-1921, Community Doukhobors purchased a large tract of timber in the area, settled in the camp and operated two saw mills. In 1924, a forest fire destroyed the mills, camp and timber stands, killing several Doukhobor workmen. Of no further use, the camp was abandoned. The siding was discontinued in the 1930’s. The wasteland was sold following the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1938. [District Lot 276, Kootenay District] [49° 16' 00" N - 117° 13' 00" W]
