Borisoglebsk

District: Borisoglebsk
Province: Voronezh
Country: Russia

Doukhoborism arose in the Borisoglebsk (Борисоглебск) district of Tambov province (present-day Voronezh province), Russia in the mid-1700s, having presumably spread there from the neighboring Tambov district. It gained many converts among the free peasants of the district, particularly those of Rusanovo, Bratkovo, Suino, Kostino-Otdelets, Perevoz, Rzhanaya, Uvarovo, Tverintsovo and Vershina villages and the town of Borisoglebsk. For decades, Borisoglebsk Doukhobors practiced their faith in secret. In 1811, several hundred Borisoglebsk Doukhobors petitioned authorities to resettle to Bessarabia province; they were refused. Small groups of Borisoglebsk Doukhobors may have subsequently received permission to relocate to the Melitopol district of Tavria province; others were denied the right to relocate there. Eventually, a small group of these Borisoglebsk Doukhobors were permitted to join their brethren in the Kedabek district of Elizavetpol province in 1842. [51.36920° N, 42.09274° E]
