Appledale
In 1910, the West Kootenay Orchard Association subdivided a 3,000 acre parcel of land along the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Slocan River valley, 28 miles northwest of Nelson, British Columbia. It was originally named Appledale Orchards, a reference to the developers’ plans for extensive apple orchards throughout the valley. By 1913, the name was shortened to Appledale. A small farming hamlet was formed there by English and American settlers complete with a store, school (1913) and post office (1914). In 1931, the CPR built a railway station there. Situated near several communal Doukhobor settlements (1912-1963), Appledale has been an important centre of Doukhobor activity. Following the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1939, Doukhobors established a number of businesses and private residences in Appledale. Today, Appledale is a small, unincorporated rural farming community (2006 pop. 315). [49° 39' 0" N - 117° 32' 0" W]
