Mescitli

District: Arpacay
Province: Kars
Country: Turkey

In 1882, Doukhobors established the village of Novo-Troitskoye (Ново-Тройцкое) along the Kars River in the Zarishat district of Kars province, Russia (present-day Arpacay district, Kars province, Turkey). It was named after the village of Troitskoye in Tiflis province from whence many of them came and means “New Troitskoye”. In the 1890’s, the village name was shortened to Troitskoye (Тройцкое). After Russia ceded Kars to Turkey in 1918-1921, the Doukhobor population abandoned the village and relocated to Rostov province. Thereafter it was resettled by Turks and renamed Mescitli, derived from the Turkish term mescit ("little mosque") and meaning "place with a little mosque".
