Sovetnoye
In 1899, Doukhobors from Elizavetpol, Russia established the village of Sovetovka (Советовка) near the Whitesand River in the present Veregin district of Saskatchewan. The name is derived from the Russian term sovet, meaning “counsel”, a virtue extolled by the Doukhobor faith. In 1902, it was altered to Sovetnoye (Советное). It was abandoned by 1920 as villagers relocated to individual homesteads or to British Columbia. (1905 pop. 169) [NW14-31-2-W2, NW35-30-2-W2]
