The following is a transcription of the Semenovka Doukhobor Cemetery located 7 miles north-east of Arran, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Livingston No. 331. Historical Background
Semenovka (aka Simonovka) Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Semenovka village near Arran. After the abandonment of the village in 1917, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors. Located along Bear Head Creek, it was sometimes also known as Bear Head Cemetery. The cemetery is still in active use today. It is privately owned by the Crown and is well maintained.
Layout
The cemetery is approximately two acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is a single iron gate on the south side. The cemetery contains 170 interments in a single section comprised of 18 rows facing east-west. I have used the cemetery plot map and death certificates to identify 40 unmarked graves. There are considerable gaps between some of the marked graves which would suggest as many as 30 additional unmarked graves. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.
Driving Directions
To access the cemetery, travel east from the Village of Arran Exit on Highway No. 49 for 4 miles (6.4 km). Turn north on the gravel road and continue for 2 1/2 miles (4 km). You will pass over the Bear Head Creek bridge. Then turn east on the dirt road and continue for 220 yards (200 m). You will come to a fork in the road. Turn north on the dirt road and continue for 110 yards (100 m). The road ends in front of the cemetery gate. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.
