Historical Background
Ospenia (aka Uspeniye) Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Uspeniye village near Blaine Lake. After the abandonment of the village in 1913, the cemetery continued to be used by Doukhobors living in the Ospenia School District No. 2386 (1909-1957) and is still in active use today. It is privately owned and is maintained by a cemetery committee. The cemetery is in very good condition.
Layout
The cemetery is one and a half acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is an iron gate on the east side. The cemetery contains approximately 130 interments in a single section comprised of eleven rows facing east-west. Over half the graves (approximately 65) have no marker and the mounds have been levelled. These remain unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.
