Bogomdannoye Cemetery Site – Arran District, Saskatchewan

The following is an overview of the Bogomdannoye Doukhobor Cemetery Site located 8 miles north of Arran, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Livingston No. 331. Land location: SE 16-35-30 West of First. Latitude: 51°59.896. Longitude: 101°41.689. Compiled on September 2, 2006 by Jonathan J. Kalmakoff with Fred Petroff and George Negrave.

Historical Background

Bogomdannoye Cemetery was established in 1905 by the Doukhobors of Bogomdannoye village near Arran. After the abandonment of the village in 1917, the cemetery ceased to be actively used. In the 1990’s, the cemetery site was destroyed. It is privately owned.

Layout

According to tradition, the cemetery was approximately half an acre in size. The cemetery contained approximately 25 interments in one or more rows facing east-west. The graves were unmarked. When the site was cleared in the 1990’s, all traces of the cemetery were removed. It is currently under cultivation.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel north from the junction of Highway No. 49 and the Village of Arran Exit for 6 miles (9.6 km).  Then turn east on the grid road and continue for 1/2  a mile (.8 km).  Turn north on the grid road and continue for 2 miles (3.2 km). Then turn east on the grid road and continue for 1 mile (1.6 km). The cemetery is on the north side of the road, along the property line, approximately 50 yards (45 m) from the road allowance. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.

Burials

There is no burial register, cemetery plot map, death certificates, grave markers or other records for the Bogomdannoye Cemetery site. However, the following families resided in Bogomdannoye village and may have members buried at the Bogomdannoye Cemetery site: Barabanoff, Berikoff, Chernenkoff, Gremakin, Gretchin, Kinakin, Krasnikoff, Legebokoff, Malakoff, Pictin, Sofonoff.

Lapshinoff Family History

The Lapshin family of Doukhobors originated in Ekaterinoslav province, Russia (present-day Dniepropetrovsk province, Ukraine) in the 18th century. In c.1802 the Lapshins settled in the village of Goreloye in the Melitopol district of Tavria province (present-day Zaporozhye province, Ukraine). In 1845 the Lapshins were exiled to the Caucasus where they resettled in the village of Novo-Goreloye in Elizavetpol province (present-day Azerbaijan Republic). At that time the family name was changed to Lapshinov. In 1878 the Lapshinovs resettled in the village of Gorelovka in Kars province (present-day Turkey). In 1899 the Lapshinovs emigrated from Russia to Canada, where they settled in the Blaine Lake, Canora and Veregin districts of Saskatchewan. At that time the family name was changed to Lapshinoff. Today most family members reside in the provinces of Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
